Animaniacs: Six degrees of Kevin McCallister

The great news for anyone who loves cartoons, comedy or who just grew up in the nineties is that Animaniacs is now on Netflix. The smart, anarchic, ahead of it’s time kids show dropped in time for the whole country to wake up on Saturday morning and binge watch cartoons like they were ten years old again.

The show, centered around Yakko, Wakko and Dot, featured segments of multiple other characters. One thing I’ve always wondered is whether The Goodfeathers, a trio of New York pigeons based on the three main characters in Scorsese’s Goodfellas, found their way into a real life movie.

In Home Alone 2, there’s a scene at the ice rink outside Rockerfeller Center where Harry Lime (played by Joe Pesci, who also played Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas) is waiting for Marv as he skates. Before leaning on a wall, he irritably shoos away three pigeons who are say on it. It could be a coincidence, but is this a sly reference to Animaniacs, which was in production at Warner Bros at the same time Fox were shooting Lost in New York?

In the grand scheme of things, we’ll probably never knew and it seems unlikely, but I like to think it’s real life Joe Pesci meeting his pigeon counterpart.
